OpenAI confirmed through its system status page that it was investigating issues affecting ChatGPT and related services. The company later announced that all affected systems had recovered following a period of elevated error rates.
Pattern of disruptions emerges
Saturday's incident followed previous outages on July 23 and July 21, with the latter affecting image generation capabilities. The cluster of disruptions adds to a troubling track record: OpenAI has experienced 172 ChatGPT incidents since October 2025, averaging roughly 18 per month, with typical resolution times of approximately 305 minutes.

According to Downdetector's breakdown, 80% of reported issues centered on ChatGPT itself, while 8% related to the mobile app and another 8% to the API. Downdetector, a crowdsourced outage tracking platform that monitors over 25,000 services across 64 countries, aggregates user-submitted reports and compares them against historical traffic patterns using statistical analysis.
Massive scale of impact
The outage disrupted services for a platform that has become integral to daily operations for millions. ChatGPT reached 1 billion monthly active users in June 2026, making it the fastest app in history to reach that milestone. The service processes approximately 2.5 billion prompts daily from users worldwide.
The business implications are significant. OpenAI's annualized revenue exceeded $25 billion by February 2026, with 92% of Fortune 500 companies now using ChatGPT and over 7 million enterprise workplace seats active.
