Apple is preparing a successor to its ultra-thin iPhone Air that could address key limitations of the original model, including camera capabilities and battery capacity, according to multiple reports from industry sources.
The iPhone Air 2, now scheduled for a spring 2027 release, represents Apple's second attempt at an ultra-slim smartphone after the first-generation model faced commercial challenges. The original iPhone Air, measuring just 5.6 millimeters thick and weighing 165 grams, became Apple's thinnest iPhone ever but made notable compromises to achieve that profile.
Sales struggles prompt delayed launch
The path to the iPhone Air 2 has been uncertain. Reports from The Information in November indicated Apple had indefinitely delayed the next-generation model after disappointing sales performance. The company had notified engineers and suppliers that the device was being removed from the schedule without a new release date.
Market research data painted a stark picture of the original model's reception. According to Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, only 6% of US iPhone shoppers surveyed purchased the iPhone Air in the quarter ending December 2025, compared to 22% for the standard iPhone 17, 25% for the iPhone 17 Pro, and 27% for the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
The commercial struggles prompted significant production cuts. Supplier Foxconn reportedly dismantled all but one and a half iPhone Air production lines, while Luxshare halted production entirely at the end of October 2025.
However, The Information later updated its reporting to clarify that Apple had not abandoned the project entirely, with the device now targeting a spring 2027 launch alongside the base iPhone 18 model rather than the September 2026 timeframe originally planned.
Dual camera system in development
The most significant hardware upgrade concerns the camera system. Bloomberg and The Information report that Apple plans to add a second rear camera to the iPhone Air 2. According to Bloomberg, the additional sensor will be an ultra-wide camera rather than a telephoto lens.
This represents a major shift from the first-generation model, which featured only a single rear camera. The dual-camera setup would align the iPhone Air more closely with Apple's standard iPhone models while maintaining its slim profile.
Battery capacity increase expected
Apple is also working to address battery life concerns with a capacity upgrade. Supply chain sources point to a 3,500mAh battery for the iPhone Air 2, compared to the 3,149mAh cell in the current model. This represents an increase of more than 10%.
The battery improvements could be further enhanced by the expected A20 Pro chip, which industry reports suggest will be manufactured using TSMC's 2nm process. The new processor could deliver up to 15% higher performance and 30% better power efficiency compared to the A19 generation, potentially extending battery life beyond what the capacity increase alone would provide.
The battery challenge facing Apple is particularly acute given competitive developments in the industry. Chinese manufacturers have adopted silicon-carbon battery technology that enables higher energy density in thin devices. The Honor Magic8 Pro Air, for example, achieves a 5,500mAh capacity at 6.1mm thickness, substantially outperforming the iPhone Air's 3,190mAh at 5.6mm.
Advanced cooling system considered
The iPhone Air 2 may also incorporate vapor chamber cooling technology, according to The Information. Apple first introduced this cooling system in the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, where it uses liquid evaporation to dissipate heat more efficiently than traditional graphite sheets, improving thermal conductivity by up to 300%.
For the iPhone Air 2, the advanced cooling could enable better temperature management during demanding tasks and sustained high performance without excessive heat buildup.
Market positioning and pricing
The original iPhone Air launched at $999 in September 2025, positioned between the $799 iPhone 17 and the $1,099 iPhone 17 Pro. While Apple has not announced pricing for the successor, the addition of a second camera and other upgrades could affect the device's market positioning.
Interestingly, network usage data from Ookla's analysis of global Speedtest results in Q4 2025 showed the iPhone Air captured 6.8% of the iPhone 17 lineup mix, more than double the iPhone 16 Plus's 2.9% share of the previous generation. This suggests the ultra-thin form factor found more acceptance than Apple's larger Plus-sized models, even if overall sales fell short of company expectations.
The spring 2027 timeline gives Apple additional development time to refine the ultra-thin design and potentially address the compromises that limited the first model's appeal. Whether the company can successfully balance extreme thinness with the features users expect remains the central question for the iPhone Air lineup.
