Elon Musk's X launches invite-only money transfer service with 6% yield
X Money debuts as invite-only banking service offering real-time transfers, 6% deposit yields, and cashback rewards. The platform enters a competitive peer-to-peer payments market valued at $3.2 trillion globally.

X Money launches with premium features for subscribers
Elon Musk's social media platform X has launched X Money, a banking service that allows users to transfer funds, earn yields on deposits, and make purchases with a Visa debit card. The service is currently available by invitation only to X's premium subscribers.
X Money operates through a partnership with Cross River Bank, a Fort Lee, New Jersey-based financial institution that provides Banking-as-a-Service infrastructure for major fintech companies including Coinbase, Affirm, and Upstart. Under this arrangement, Cross River handles the banking operations while X provides the customer-facing platform and branding.
Features and incentives
The service offers a 6% annual percentage yield on deposits of at least $1,000, significantly above the 4% to 4.5% APY offered by top-tier high-yield savings accounts from online banks like Ally, Marcus, and SoFi as of late June 2026. Users also receive 3% cashback on eligible purchases.
To access these benefits, customers must maintain X's premium subscription, which costs at least $8 monthly. This means users would need to deposit approximately $1,600 to cover the subscription cost while still earning competitive returns.
X Money users receive an X-branded Visa debit card usable at any ATM. The service includes Apple Wallet integration, allowing users to add a virtual X Card to Apple Pay for tap-to-pay functionality without requiring a physical card. The platform enables real-time money transfers between X users.
Regulatory landscape
X has been securing money transmitter licenses across the United States as part of its payments strategy. The company obtained licenses in 23 states by March 2024 and expanded to 38 states by October 2024. However, X withdrew its application for a money transmitter license in New York in April 2024, leaving it without authorization in one of the nation's most significant financial regulatory jurisdictions.
Competitive market
X Money enters a crowded and rapidly growing marketplace. The global peer-to-peer payment app market was valued at $3.2 trillion in 2025 and is projected to reach $16.4 trillion by 2034. Established competitors include PayPal's Venmo, which has approximately 90 million active users in the United States, as well as Zelle and Cash App.
Musk's financial services vision
The launch represents a return to Musk's roots in financial technology. He co-founded X.com, one of the first online banks, which launched in December 1999 and merged with Confinity, the creator of PayPal, in March 2000. Musk has repeatedly stated his ambition to transform X into an "everything app" that incorporates comprehensive financial services alongside social media functionality.
The X Money rollout comes after years of preparation to build the regulatory and technical infrastructure required for financial services. By leveraging Cross River Bank's established banking operations, X can offer services without the lengthy and costly process of obtaining its own banking charter.
