Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara sequel in development, Zoya Akhtar confirms—but urges fans to temper expectations
Director Zoya Akhtar has confirmed a sequel to the 2011 hit is underway, though she cautions that nothing is guaranteed. The announcement follows a 2025 reunion campaign that reignited fan speculation.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara sequel underway, Zoya Akhtar says they're 'on it'— but no promises yet
Fifteen years after Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, and Abhay Deol embarked on their transformative Spanish road trip, director Zoya Akhtar has confirmed that a sequel to Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is officially in development—though she's quick to manage expectations.
Speaking at the Monsoon Film Festival, which ran from July 17 to August 9, 2026, and was curated in collaboration with The Hollywood Reporter India and Nilaya Anthology, Akhtar addressed the speculation that has surrounded the beloved film since last year. "We are on it," she told The Hollywood Reporter, before adding a measured disclaimer: "We don't know what will happen and what won't... if we will get to a place where it feels correct, in catching up with these characters today. But it will be nice."
The reunion that sparked a frenzy
The sequel rumours gained momentum in early 2025, when the original trio reunited for a tourism campaign promoting Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. The 'Zindagi Ko Yas Bol' campaign, which ran from March 3 to March 17, 2025, featured a five-episode series co-written by Akhtar and her frequent collaborator Reema Kagti. The campaign achieved 1.5 billion views on social media, sending fans into a nostalgic tailspin.
Many viewers initially mistook the polished advertisement for an actual film trailer, leading to both excitement and subsequent backlash when the truth emerged. "People thought it was a trailer," Akhtar recalled. "First, they were like, 'YEAH!' But then I got abused in my DMs saying, 'This was not funny.'" The director acknowledged that playing with fan nostalgia carries significant risk.
The original film's enduring impact
Released in 2011, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara follows three childhood friends—uptight workaholic Arjun, adrenaline-junkie Kabir, and romantic Imran—on a bachelor road trip across Spain. What begins as a series of daredevil activities (skydiving, deep-sea diving, and running with the bulls) evolves into an existential reckoning as each character confronts unresolved personal demons.
The film was a critical and commercial triumph, becoming the highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2011 with worldwide collections of approximately ₹153 crore against a budget reported between ₹45 and ₹55 crore. It earned Akhtar the Filmfare Award for Best Director, while the soundtrack—composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy with lyrics by Javed Akhtar—topped the Bollyspice Top 10 Music albums of 2011 list.
Beyond box office success, the film had measurable cultural impact. Produced in close collaboration with Spain's tourism promotion agency, Turespaña, it reportedly boosted tourism to Spain from India by 32% in the years following its release, cementing its status as more than just entertainment.
Addressing the 'rich people problems' critique
Akhtar also confronted a criticism that has followed her throughout her career: that her films predominantly explore the conflicts of affluent characters. While Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Dil Dhadakne Do fit this description, her filmography extends far beyond, including Gully Boy—which was India's official entry to the Oscars and received a record-breaking 13 Filmfare Awards in 2020—and her work on Lust Stories.
Her response to the critique is pragmatic. "It still comes up, but it does not bother me now. These are stories and, as a filmmaker, I get to tell stories of all kinds of people. I totally respect it if it's something that does not resonate with you, or these are not conflicts and complexities you are interested in. But I am interested, and so I'll make them… someone will watch them."
What's next
Whether the sequel materializes remains uncertain. The original cast included Katrina Kaif, Kalki Koechlin, and Naseeruddin Shah, shot across Spain, India, and the UK. Akhtar's measured approach suggests she's unwilling to rush production simply to capitalize on nostalgia—a stance that may ultimately serve the project better than a hasty cash-in.
For now, fans will have to wait and see if Arjun, Kabir, and Imran's story gets the continuation it deserves, or if this will remain a tantalizing what-if in Bollywood's sequel landscape.
