Christopher Nolan's $250 million epic The Odyssey has crossed Rs 100 crore in India within a week, becoming only the 21st Hollywood film to achieve this milestone and outperforming Oppenheimer's early box office run.

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has stormed past the Rs 100 crore gross mark in India within its first week of release, cementing its status as a box office phenomenon and joining an exclusive club of just 21 Hollywood films to reach this milestone in the country.
The $250 million epic, Nolan's most expensive production to date and the first to be shot entirely on IMAX 70mm film cameras, collected Rs 6.15 crore net on its seventh day across 11,111 shows in India. This brings the film's total India net collection to Rs 90.30 crore, with gross earnings standing at Rs 107.72 crore, according to Sacnilk.
The film launched with Rs 17.40 crore on Friday, followed by Rs 22 crore on Saturday and Rs 21.90 crore on Sunday. Weekday collections settled at Rs 8 crore on Monday, Rs 8.35 crore on Tuesday, Rs 6.50 crore on Wednesday, and Rs 6.15 crore on Thursday, marking a modest 5 per cent decline from the previous day.
The original English version accounts for the bulk of Indian earnings with Rs 66.55 crore net, while the Hindi dubbed version has contributed Rs 10.25 crore. Telugu and Tamil versions have added Rs 4.55 crore and Rs 2.80 crore respectively. The film, which received an A certificate from the CBFC, is screening in 2D, IMAX 2D, and 4DX formats.
Global performance exceeds expectations
Globally, The Odyssey has accumulated $322 million, including $181 million from North America, according to BoxOfficeMojo. The film earned $18.05 million in North America on Wednesday, representing a 16 per cent drop from Tuesday's $21.4 million. Its six-day domestic total reached $181.6 million.
This performance puts The Odyssey approximately 54 per cent ahead of Oppenheimer at the same point in its theatrical run. Nolan's previous blockbuster had earned $10.6 million on its first Wednesday and stood at $117.8 million domestically after six days. Oppenheimer eventually grossed $960 million worldwide and won multiple Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.
The Odyssey also opened with $264 million globally in its first weekend, surpassing The Dark Knight Rises, The Dark Knight, and Oppenheimer to become Nolan's biggest global debut.
Ambitious production scale
The film was shot across eight countries between February and August 2025, with locations spanning Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, Western Sahara, Malta, and studio facilities in Los Angeles. Produced by Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolan through their company Syncopy and distributed by Universal Pictures, the production represents a massive logistical undertaking.
Nolan drew inspiration from Emily Wilson's 2017 translation of Homer's ancient epic and the special effects work of Ray Harryhausen, aiming for a realistic interpretation of Greek mythology. The source material, an epic poem written in the 8th century BCE comprising more than 12,000 lines organized into 24 books, is one of the oldest surviving stories in history.
The film follows King Odysseus, played by Matt Damon, as he attempts to return home after the Trojan War, a journey that spans a decade. The star-studded cast includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, and Charlize Theron. The technical team features music by Ludwig Göransson, cinematography by Hoyte van Hoytema, and editing by Jennifer Lame, continuing Nolan's collaborations with key crew members.
