A 32-year-old Toronto man wanted for the murder of his Indian partner has been arrested at a Toronto airport after an international police operation that spanned nearly seven months.

Abdul Ghafoori was detained on Friday following coordination between Toronto Police's fugitive squad, homicide unit, and international law enforcement agencies. He faces a first-degree murder charge in connection with the death of 30-year-old Himanshi Khurana, whose body was discovered at a Toronto residence in December 2025.

Authorities have not disclosed Ghafoori's whereabouts during the months he remained at large or which countries assisted in his capture.

Timeline of events

The case began on December 19, 2025, when Toronto Police received a missing person report at approximately 10:41 p.m. regarding a woman in the Strachan Avenue and Wellington Street West area. Officers launched an immediate search operation.

At around 6:30 a.m. the following morning, police found Khurana dead inside a residence in the same neighbourhood. The death was subsequently classified as a homicide.

Investigators determined that Khurana and Ghafoori had been in an intimate relationship. Police characterized the killing as an act of intimate partner violence.

Following the investigation, authorities obtained a Canada-wide arrest warrant for Ghafoori on a first-degree murder charge. Police released his photograph and appealed to the public for information about his location.

Legal consequences

First-degree murder in Canada carries a mandatory life sentence with no possibility of parole for 25 years. Courts have no discretion to impose a shorter parole ineligibility period. If convicted, Ghafoori would face this automatic sentence.

Canada does not maintain a separate Criminal Code offence specifically labelled as domestic violence or intimate partner violence. Such cases are prosecuted under existing provisions including murder and assault charges, with intimate partner abuse treated as an aggravating factor during sentencing.

Broader context of intimate partner violence

The arrest comes amid growing concerns about intimate partner violence across Canada. Statistics Canada recorded 128,175 victims of police-reported intimate partner violence in 2024, representing a rate of 356 per 100,000 population aged 12 and older. This marks a 14 percent increase since 2018.

In 2025, 147 women and girls were violently killed in Canada. Thirty-four percent were killed by a current or former intimate partner, and 72 percent were killed in private locations such as their own homes.

The case occurred during a year when Toronto recorded 44 homicides in 2025, representing a 55 percent decrease from 86 homicides in 2024. This marked one of the city's lowest homicide rates in two decades.

Police statistics from other Canadian cities illustrate the scope of the issue. In Ottawa alone during 2025, intimate partner violence incidents averaged 21 calls per day, with 7,840 incidents reported resulting in 2,626 charges laid, showing a 6 percent increase from 2024.

Indian government response

Following Khurana's death, the Consulate General of India in Toronto expressed shock and grief. Officials stated they were providing assistance to her family and closely following the case in coordination with local authorities.

India represents a significant source of immigration to Canada, with Indian nationals accounting for 27 percent of all international students in the country as of late 2023, when 278,860 Indian students were studying in Canada.

Legal proceedings against Ghafoori are now underway in the Canadian justice system.
