Nine killed in truck collision on central Iran's Kashan-Qom road
A trailer truck and two other vehicles collided on the old Kashan-Qom road in central Iran on Saturday evening, killing nine people and injuring one, Iranian authorities said.

Rescuers confirm nine deaths at the scene
A six-member rescue team was sent immediately after the crash, which occurred around 8 p.m., according to Mohammad Mesbahi Moghaddam, who heads the Iranian Red Crescent Society in Kashan. Responders' initial assessment found that all nine victims had died at the scene.
The injured person, the truck driver's assistant, was taken to a medical facility in Kashan for treatment.
Moghaddam said authorities were still investigating the cause and circumstances of the collision.
National figures show heavy losses on intercity roads
Iran's Legal Medicine Organization reported 19,540 traffic deaths over the preceding year in a report published in June 2026. That total was little changed from the previous year's 19,435 deaths, according to IranWire's September 2026 coverage.
Intercity roads accounted for 13,382 deaths in the Iranian year ending March 20, Rudaw reported, citing Legal Medicine Organization figures carried by ISNA. The highest provincial tolls were in Tehran with 1,565 deaths, Fars with 1,543, and Sistan and Baluchestan with 1,390. Qom was among the provinces with the lowest totals.
Separate Traffic Police figures put the nationwide intercity road toll for August 2026 at more than 1,609, averaging more than 50 deaths a day. IranWire reported those figures in September, attributing them to Ahmad Karami-Asad, deputy chief of Rahvar Traffic Police.
How the annual toll compares
Rudaw compared Iran's annual total of more than 19,500 road deaths, recorded by the Legal Medicine Organization for the Iranian year ending March 20, with the European Union's roughly 19,400 fatalities in 2025. The EU had a population of about 450 million.
Neighboring Turkey, with about 88 million residents, recorded around 6,000 road deaths over the same period, according to Rudaw.
