Sharjah closes major road for three days starting Wednesday
The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority announced a three-day closure of a key road connecting two major squares for maintenance and infrastructure development, urging motorists to follow traffic diversions.
Key Sharjah road to be closed off for three days
A major road in Sharjah will be closed for three days starting Wednesday as part of ongoing maintenance and infrastructure development work, the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority announced.
The closure affects the road from Sheikh Mohammed bin Sultan Bu Alian Square to Saeed bin Obaid Al-Jarwan Square, specifically from the Al-Jazat region side. The restriction will remain in place from Wednesday through Friday.
Al-Jazat is a residential neighborhood in the Al Riqqa suburb of Sharjah, situated on Sheikh Khalid Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi Street and bordered by Al Hazannah to the west and Al Ramla to the east.
The authority has called on road users to follow approved traffic diversions, use alternative routes, and adhere to signboards and traffic safety guidelines during the closure period.
Part of broader infrastructure upgrade
The temporary closure forms part of Sharjah's ambitious program of road, bridge, and tunnel construction aimed at modernizing transport infrastructure and increasing road capacity across the emirate in 2026. The third most populous emirate in the UAE, with approximately 1.872 million residents, has been implementing a series of major traffic diversions to accommodate these large-scale infrastructure projects.
The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority, established in 2014 by decree of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, oversees road infrastructure systems and projects across the emirate's 2,590 square kilometers. The authority manages traffic signboards and road marks, and coordinates with competent authorities on both short and long-term strategic road development plans.
These infrastructure improvements come as Sharjah continues to experience robust economic growth, with the emirate's GDP reaching AED 145.2 billion in 2023, driven primarily by a non-oil sector that contributed AED 142.5 billion, up from AED 133.1 billion in 2022.
The authority's expanding role in transport development extends beyond local road management. In February 2024, SRTA and Oman National Transport Company signed an agreement to launch an international bus route from Sharjah to Muscat, the second such international route in the UAE.
