Kansas City Fire Department crews were dispatched between 10 and 11 a.m. to the area near 18th and Paseo, where portable toilets had been installed for a FIFA World Cup watch party. Kansas City is hosting six matches during the 2026 tournament at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, including a quarter-final on July 11.
A worker from Patriot Portable Restrooms discovered the trapped man while collecting units after the event. After knocking on one toilet and hearing a response, the employee called for help. When a nearby police officer unlocked the door, the man explained he couldn't reach the exit, but responders initially saw no one inside.
Then a head suddenly emerged through the toilet opening. The man had climbed into the waste holding tank beneath the seat and become stuck.
Specialized rescue operation required
The rescue presented significant technical challenges. Confined-space rescue operations are classified as specialized incidents requiring dedicated training and procedures according to FEMA's National Fire Academy materials. Industry professionals explain that portable toilet waste tanks typically hold approximately 55 gallons and are large enough for a smaller person to fit inside, though they were never designed for human entry.
Firefighters first attempted to talk the man through climbing out independently. When those efforts failed, crews used saws to dismantle sections of the portable toilet to safely extract him. The operation unfolded in dangerous conditions, with temperatures climbing into the low 90s Fahrenheit and high humidity pushing the heat index even higher inside the enclosed plastic structure.
OSHA statistics indicate that 60 percent of all confined space fatalities involve rescuers attempting to help someone else, highlighting the risks emergency responders faced during the operation.
Unharmed but unexplained
After being freed, firefighters rinsed the man with water from one of their trucks. Battalion Chief Riley Nolan reported that the man declined medical treatment and walked away from the scene. No arrests were made.
Authorities have not publicly identified the man or explained why retrieving the bottle was important enough to climb into the holding tank the morning after dropping it. By the time he was discovered, he had reportedly been trapped for approximately eight hours.
