The cast of Nashville gathered in grief this week to honor Hayden Panettiere, who died Sunday, August 16, at age 36. Panettiere portrayed breakout country star Juliette Barnes across all six seasons of the series, which aired from October 2012 to July 2018, first on ABC and later on CMT after the network picked it up in 2016. Her death at a private residence in Greenville, South Carolina, has prompted an outpouring of emotion from those who worked closely with her over the show's 124-episode run.

A turbulent brilliance

Sylvia Jefferies, who played Panettiere's on-screen mother Jolene Barnes throughout the series, shared one of the most personal reflections on Instagram Monday. The 57-year-old actress admitted she needed a full day to process the loss, recalling how she once called her co-star "a downright tornado" due to her intensity on set.

At times, Hayden was not easy to be around. I remember calling her a downright tornado. But she was our tornado. The sun that appears, the light mist that begins, the rain that gets heavier, the swirling of everything around her, and then the gentle tapering rain returns, along with the calm and sun and light in her eyes, and the giggle in her voice.

Jefferies described watching Panettiere navigate her internal battles while delivering performances that earned her two Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress. "She had an incredibly bright future ahead of her, although her inner demons were at times too much to bear," she reflected.

The two actresses, born nearly 20 years apart, had grown closer recently after Jefferies read Panettiere's 2026 memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning. The book opened difficult chapters of Panettiere's life, including her grief over her younger brother Jansen, who died in February 2023 at age 28 from cardiomegaly and aortic valve complications. They had planned to reunite at castmate Charles Esten's concert on August 14, just two days before Panettiere's death. Jefferies closed her tribute imagining Panettiere reunited with her brother, "dancing in that water with the dolphins for whom you cared so dearly."

Remembering a unique talent

Connie Britton, who starred opposite Panettiere as Rayna Jaymes for six seasons, posted her own tribute Monday with photos spanning their years together. The 59-year-old actress described her former co-star as "bursting with brilliance, shining so bright," adding that she was left heartbroken and without words.

Charles Esten, who portrayed Deacon Claybourne on the series created by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Callie Khouri, recalled meeting Panettiere at his very first audition. He watched her embody the role of Juliette Barnes completely from the start, transforming their hard work into genuine friendship filled with laughter despite heavy storylines. Esten praised the way she brought her own charisma and humor to the character, calling it "a great gift" to have acted, sung, and been friends with her.

Bethany Joy Lenz, who knew Panettiere since childhood and later appeared with her in One Tree Hill, shared her devastation. "I knew the wild little blonde. Was she nine? Ten? I was eighteen," Lenz wrote, recalling a young actress who ran through studio hallways with unruly curls, already demonstrating astonishing intelligence and understanding of human struggle on camera. "It's too young and there's still so much more life," she added.

Panettiere's career began at 11 months old in commercials and continued through soap operas including One Life to Live and Guiding Light. She rose to fame at 16 playing cheerleader Claire Bennet in NBC's Heroes, which ran from 2006 to 2010 and earned her three Teen Choice Awards. The series revolved around the tagline "Save the cheerleader, save the world."

Investigation continues

Panettiere's father, Alan Lee "Skip" Panettiere, released a statement through a family representative describing his daughter as a source of love and joy for everyone who knew her, both personally and professionally.

Greenville authorities confirmed that police and emergency services responded to a call about an unresponsive woman at approximately 1:50 p.m. local time on August 16. Dispatch audio reviewed by media outlets referenced possible cardiac arrest and an overdose, though the Greenville Police Department stated its preliminary investigation found no signs of foul play. Greenville County Coroner Mike Ellis reported that an autopsy revealed no trauma that would explain the death. The official cause and manner of death remain pending further toxicology results and investigative work.

Panettiere leaves behind a daughter, Kaya Evdokia Klitschko, born in December 2014, from her relationship with former world heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko.
