Veteran Indian Actor Pradeep Rawat Dies at 74 After Battle with Blood Cancer

Veteran Indian actor Pradeep Rawat, whose menacing portrayal of Ghajini Dharmatma in the 2008 Aamir Khan-starrer became one of Bollywood's most memorable antagonist roles, died on Tuesday evening at a hospital in Mumbai. He was 74.

Rawat had been battling blood cancer and spent the past month receiving treatment at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai before being transferred to a cancer facility in Bhiwandi. His manager, Siddharth R. Tiwari, confirmed the actor's passing.

The actor is survived by his wife, Kalyani Rawat, and their son, Vikramaditya Rawat.

A Four-Decade Career Across Indian Cinema

Rawat's acting journey began with the 1985 film Meri Jung, but he achieved household recognition through his role as Ashwatthama in B.R. Chopra's iconic television series Mahabharat. This breakthrough performance established him as a formidable presence in Indian entertainment.

Over four decades, Rawat built an impressive filmography across Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, Bengali, Tamil, Kannada, Bhojpuri, Nepali, and Marathi cinema, becoming one of Indian cinema's most recognizable screen villains. His versatility allowed him to seamlessly transition between different film industries, earning acclaim in each.

The Ghajini Legacy

Rawat's performance in Ghajini holds particular significance in his career. He originally played Ghajini Dharmatma in the 2005 Tamil version and was among the few actors retained for the 2008 Hindi remake opposite Aamir Khan, a testament to the strength of his portrayal. The Hindi remake became the first Bollywood film to cross the Rs 100 crore mark at the box office, collecting approximately Rs 189 crore worldwide and marking a watershed moment in Indian cinema.

His other notable performances include roles in Sarfarosh and Lagaan, the latter earning nomination for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2002, making it one of only three Indian films to receive this honor.

Regional Cinema Success

In 2004, Rawat made his Telugu cinema debut with director S.S. Rajamouli's film Sye, portraying Bikshu Yadav. The performance earned widespread acclaim and marked a major turning point in his career, opening doors to the Telugu film industry where he appeared in successful films including Naayak.

His most recent work was in the historical drama Chhaava, released on February 14, 2025, where he portrayed Yesaji Kank opposite Vicky Kaushal. The film has achieved significant box office success, collecting over Rs 530 crore globally.

Industry Mourns

Condolences poured in from across the film industry following news of Rawat's death. His Lagaan co-star and longtime friend Yashpal Sharma wrote,

Actor Gajendra Chauhan, who worked with Rawat on Mahabharat, paid tribute saying,
