When the Henley Passport Index launched in 2006, the Emirati passport ranked 62nd globally with access to only 35 destinations. Today, it trails only Singapore, which holds the top position with access to 192 destinations. The index, compiled using exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), tracks global travel freedom across 227 countries and territories, ranking 199 passports based on the number of destinations holders can enter without obtaining a visa in advance.
Accelerated Progress in Recent Years
The UAE's ascent has been particularly pronounced over the past decade. The passport climbed from 38th place in 2016 to its current second-place ranking in 2026, representing a 36-place advancement in just ten years. This acceleration followed key diplomatic milestones, most notably the 2015 Schengen visa waiver agreement, which helped propel the passport into the top 40 global rankings.
According to Henley & Partners analysis, the UAE is among countries whose passport strength significantly exceeds what its Global Peace Index ranking alone would suggest. This disparity highlights the critical role of strategic diplomacy and economic influence in building travel freedom, rather than relying solely on peaceful conditions.
Infrastructure and Modernization Efforts
The UAE has invested substantially in passport infrastructure alongside its diplomatic efforts. In 2021, authorities launched a new generation of Emirati passports featuring advanced security elements including polycarbonate pages and holographic emblems as part of a broader digital transformation initiative. More recently, in March 2024, the UAE Cabinet extended passport validity from five to ten years for citizens aged 21 and above, streamlining travel convenience for Emiratis.
