Dubai Airport introduces pre-eligibility check for Smart Gates passengers

Dubai Airports has launched a new service enabling passengers to verify their eligibility for Smart Gates before arriving at immigration checkpoints, part of efforts to streamline travel through one of the world's busiest international hubs.

The Smart Gates Pre-Eligibility Verification service, developed in collaboration with Dubai's General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), provides instant confirmation of whether travelers can use automated passport gates. Passengers can access the service through the Pocket Flights platform or by scanning QR codes displayed throughout airport terminals and at boarding gates.

Dubai International Airport handled 95.2 million passengers in 2025, marking the highest annual international passenger traffic ever recorded by any airport. With forecasts projecting 99.5 million passengers in 2026, the airport continues to expand its digital infrastructure to manage growing volumes efficiently.

Rapid processing through AI technology

More than 9 million travelers completed immigration procedures through Smart Gates at Dubai airports in the first half of 2026. AI-powered technology has reduced average border processing time from 12.5 seconds to just 3.4 seconds, demonstrating the system's effectiveness in managing passenger flow.

Smart Gates at Dubai airports are available to UAE and GCC nationals, UAE residents, and visa-on-arrival guests with biometric passports. Travelers must be at least 1.2 meters tall to use the automated gates, which employ facial and iris recognition technology combined with biometric passport scanning to complete passport control procedures without human intervention.

The pre-eligibility verification service aims to reduce uncertainty for passengers before they reach immigration checkpoints, allowing them to plan their route through the airport more effectively. Dubai Airports stated the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to deliver faster, more seamless journeys for millions of travelers.

Two decades of automated immigration

Dubai International Airport has been utilizing electronic gates since 2002, initially relying on e-gate cards. The airport transitioned to smart gates in 2017, operating through passport documents, Emirates ID, and iris scanners. Modern cameras installed at all entry and exit points between 2018 and 2019 contributed to a surge in adoption, with Smart Gate usage growing from 5.5 million passengers in 2017 to 13.4 million in 2022.

The airport's efficiency metrics reflect its operational standards: in 2025, 99.35% of departing passengers cleared passport control in under 10 minutes, while 98.9% cleared security in under five minutes.

By the end of 2025, Dubai International Airport was connected to 291 destinations across 110 countries, served by 108 international airlines, reinforcing its position as one of the most globally connected hubs.

Global biometric trend

The expansion of Smart Gates capabilities aligns with broader industry trends. According to a 2024 IATA Global Passenger survey, 46% of travelers used biometric identification at airports in 2024, and nearly three-quarters expressed preference for biometrics over traditional passports and boarding passes.

The number of biometrically enabled passenger touchpoints in airports globally is projected to rise to almost 51,000 by 2030, up from 12,079 at the end of 2020, representing a 78% increase in biometric-powered self-boarding gates worldwide.
