Filipino celebrities to join Alex Eala's tennis celebration at Philippine Arena

Filipino tennis star Alex Eala will headline a celebrity-filled tennis celebration at the Philippine Arena on December 8, bringing together sports and entertainment for what organizers hope will be a record-breaking event.

The occasion, titled "Alex Eala Live: Game. Set. Celebrate," will feature an exhibition match between Eala and Indonesia's top player Janice Tjen, currently ranked World No. 36. The matchup represents a meeting between two of Southeast Asia's rising tennis talents, with Eala having recently achieved a career-high ranking of World No. 18, the highest ever for a Filipino and Southeast Asian player in WTA Tour history.

Boxing icon Manny Pacquiao will join the festivities alongside actors Anne Curtis, Piolo Pascual, Julia Barretto, Donny Pangilinan and Andrea Brillantes in a celebrity tennis showcase that promises to blend athletic competition with entertainment.

Aiming for a world record

The event will take place at the Philippine Arena, a venue recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's largest mixed-use indoor theater with a seating capacity of 55,000. Organizers are aiming to surpass the current world record for tennis match attendance of 51,954, set in 2020 when Roger Federer defeated Rafael Nadal in Cape Town.

Eala's breakthrough season

The 21-year-old has experienced a breakthrough 2026 season, capturing her first WTA Tour title at the Mubadala DC Open in Washington, where she defeated World No. 3 Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the final to become the first Filipino player to win a WTA Tour singles title. She also reached the fourth round at Wimbledon, where she stunned defending champion Iga Swiatek 7-6(9), 6-2 in the third round before falling to Jasmine Paolini, and advanced to the third round at the US Open.

Her opponent, Janice Tjen, holds the second-highest ranking ever achieved by an Indonesian woman and won her first WTA singles title at the 2025 Chennai Open, becoming the first Indonesian woman to claim a tour-level title in 23 years.
