During the championship match at Arthur Ashe Stadium on September 13, ESPN's broadcast crew pulled off a seamless transition that connected a scoreboard clock reading 0:07 to Pierce Brosnan sitting in the crowd. The Irish actor, who portrayed James Bond from 1995 to 2002, became the unexpected star of a moment that tennis fans quickly dubbed "absolute cinema."
Zverev Claims Victory
The match itself saw Alexander Zverev of Germany defeat American Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-2 in three hours and 33 minutes, claiming his second Grand Slam title of 2026 after winning the French Open earlier in the year. Zverev walked away with $5.5 million in prize money, the largest sum in Grand Slam history, matching what women's champion Elena Rybakina earned the previous day.
For Shelton, the loss extended a painful streak for American men's tennis. The last American man to win a Grand Slam singles title remains Andy Roddick, who triumphed in 2003.
