Uzbekistan international Abdukodir Khusanov has extended his Manchester City contract by five years following a successful debut season that saw the club win two domestic trophies.

Manchester City defender Abdukodir Khusanov has signed a new five-year contract extension, securing his future at the club until 2031 following an impressive first 18 months in English football.
The 22-year-old centre-back arrived at the Etihad Stadium in January 2025 from French side Lens in a deal worth €40 million ($41.6 million) plus add-ons, initially signing a four-and-a-half year contract. His move made history as he became the first Uzbek player to compete in the Premier League.
Successful debut season at City
Khusanov played a key role in City's 2025-26 campaign, helping the club secure both the FA Cup and League Cup while finishing as runners-up in the Premier League. The FA Cup triumph came after City defeated Chelsea in the final, bouncing back from their defeat to Crystal Palace in the previous season's final.
The defender's rapid rise has been remarkable. He joined Lens from Belarusian Premier League side Energetik-BGU in 2023 for approximately €100,000, playing just 31 matches for the French club before City invested €40 million to bring him to Manchester.
International recognition
On the international stage, Khusanov has earned 30 caps for Uzbekistan and represented his country at the 2026 World Cup, their first-ever appearance at the tournament. He featured in all three of Uzbekistan's Group K matches against Portugal, Colombia and DR Congo, though the Central Asian nation was eliminated after the group stage.
Player reaction
"This is a great day for me and my family. I am really happy to extend my stay at City," Khusanov said. "I've enjoyed every minute since I arrived in Manchester and I feel I am growing and learning a lot as a player."
The defender acknowledged the challenge ahead under new management, with Enzo Maresca having taken the helm in June 2026 following Pep Guardiola's departure. Maresca, who previously served as Guardiola's assistant during City's historic 2018-19 treble-winning season, signed a three-year contract running until 2029.
"I have a new challenge now, which is to impress Enzo Maresca and his staff and ensure I am in his team regularly. I am determined to do that," Khusanov added.
Club confidence in young defender
Hugo Viana, who replaced Txiki Begiristain as City's director of football after joining from Sporting CP in summer 2025, expressed confidence in the young defender's potential.
"We've been really pleased and impressed by Abdukodir's development since he arrived in England," Viana said. "We're seeing him grow into a brilliant young man and an outstanding defender – but we know this is only the beginning. His physical and technical abilities are top, he has all the assets needed to be a world-class centre-back."
Viana emphasized the long-term vision behind the contract extension: "At just 22, his best years are all in front of him and his potential to get even better is clear for all to see."
Khusanov becomes the second City player to commit his long-term future to the club this week, following England forward Phil Foden's new four-year deal announced earlier in the week.
