Hot air balloons filled the skies over Bristol in western England as the 48th Bristol International Balloon Fiesta opened at Ashton Court Estate, running from August 7-9, 2026. A spectacular mass ascent at dawn saw balloons rising above the city, creating a colourful display for spectators on the ground.
The popular event has grown significantly since its inception in September 1979, when Don Cameron and the Bristol Junior Chamber launched the first fiesta with just 27 hot air balloons. Today, it stands as Europe's largest annual hot air balloon gathering, attracting over 500,000 visitors and more than 100 balloons from countries including Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany, Mexico and the United States.
Bristol's connection to the sport runs deep. The city is considered the birthplace of ballooning in Europe, where the Bristol Belle became Western Europe's first modern hot air balloon in 1967. The city is also home to Cameron Balloons, the world's largest hot air balloon manufacturer, which has been producing balloons since 1971.
Twice-daily ascents and evening spectacles
Mass balloon ascents are scheduled twice daily at dawn and dusk throughout the weekend, weather permitting. Decisions to launch are made at pilot briefings held shortly before each scheduled flight, where wind conditions are assessed to ensure safe flying.
The fiesta features iconic Nightglow displays on Friday and Saturday evenings, where tethered balloons light up in synchronisation to music, followed by fireworks. The displays have become a signature attraction, drawing large crowds to witness dozens of balloons glowing against the night sky.
The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta remains free to attend, relying on sponsorships, partnerships and volunteer efforts to maintain public accessibility. The not-for-profit event has stayed true to its founding principle of keeping admission free for nearly five decades, making it one of the most accessible major ballooning events in the world.
The event brings substantial economic benefits to the region, with the local economy benefiting significantly from visitor spending during the three-day celebration. Balloon launches, displays and other activities form part of the annual programme that has made Bristol a global destination for ballooning enthusiasts and families alike.
