Reform UK leader Nigel Farage secured victory in a snap by-election he triggered in Clacton on Friday, defeating satirical candidate Count Binface in an unusual contest that saw Britain's main political parties refuse to participate.
Farage received 22,239 votes according to electoral officials, while Count Binface — the comedic persona of Jon Harvey, who has challenged three UK prime ministers over nearly a decade wearing a metallic dustbin-shaped helmet and silver cape — finished second with 9,455 votes, exceeding pre-election expectations.
The Reform UK leader, who did not attend the result announcement at Clacton Leisure Centre, had declared victory earlier on Friday while vote counting was still ongoing. Farage first entered Parliament after seven failed attempts when he won Clacton in July 2024, having previously served as a Member of the European Parliament for South East England from 1999 to 2020.
Record ballot amid mainstream boycott
The by-election featured an unprecedented 34 candidates — a record number for any UK parliamentary contest — after Labour, the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats all refused to field candidates. The mainstream parties described Farage's decision to resign and trigger the by-election as a stunt designed to stall a parliamentary inquiry into his finances.
The absence of major party candidates resulted in a ballot dominated by joke candidates, independents and members of fringe political parties. Candidates on stage at the count were seen cheering for each other as results were announced, with many receiving fewer than 100 votes.
Officials warned that the vote count would take longer than usual because of the exceptionally long ballot papers required to accommodate all candidates. The result was called just after 6 am local time.
Low turnout in coastal constituency
Voter turnout in Thursday's election stood at 44 percent, significantly lower than the 59 percent recorded in the 2024 general election, though not unusual for a by-election held between general elections.
Clacton, a coastal constituency with an average age of 56.6 years — more than seven years above the UK national average — has long been popular as a retirement destination. The area faces significant economic challenges, with economic inactivity at 46.8 percent, more than twice the national average of 21.7 percent, and is categorized as highly deprived in terms of employment, income and education.
The constituency has a history with right-wing populist politics. In 2014, Conservative MP Douglas Carswell triggered a by-election after defecting to the UK Independence Party, winning with 59.7 percent of the vote and becoming UKIP's first elected MP.
Count Binface, who received more than 24,000 votes in the 2021 London mayoral race and finished ninth out of 20 candidates, has built a following through satirical campaigns that highlight perceived absurdities in British politics while maintaining a serious underlying message about democratic engagement.
