From audio algorithms to embedded deployment

The position sits in Qualcomm's Audio Systems Group, within the Engineering Group's Systems Engineering area. Its focus is on on-device AI and multimedia, including the design and implementation of end-to-end audio software systems, reference designs and IP.

Echo cancellation, noise suppression and speech enhancement are central to the role. The engineer would take solutions through prototyping and commercialization, while testing audio subsystems for robustness, power consumption and stability on Qualcomm platforms.

The work also covers implementing, testing and debugging fixed-point and floating-point algorithms, including ML-based audio features. For audio ML models, the listing emphasizes efficient inference on NPUs, GPUs and CPUs, using model evaluation, quantization and compression to support fast, robust operation on embedded hardware.

Beyond algorithm development, responsibilities include benchmarking against open-source models, leading demo prototypes and collaborating with R&D, systems and integration teams on use-case verification. The engineer would also work with internal teams and customers to bring audio technologies to market.

A broader push into voice-enabled audio

The listing does not identify Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 as a project for the hire, but that platform provides context for Qualcomm's audio work. Announced at Snapdragon Summit in September 2026 alongside the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 mobile processors, it combines audio processing with expanded AI and connectivity capabilities.

Qualcomm says Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 offers up to twice its predecessor's on-device AI capability. The company also claims power consumption is up to 40% lower and the footprint up to 30% smaller than the Snapdragon S7 Gen 1 Sound Platform.

Digital Trends reports that the platform includes Qualcomm's fifth-generation active noise cancellation (ANC), cVc voice processing and support for advanced multi-microphone configurations. These features allow noise cancellation, speech capture and voice clarity to adjust to the listener and surrounding conditions.

Micro-power Wi-Fi 6E lets compatible earbuds reach cloud services directly, reducing reliance on a smartphone. Through the Snapdragon Sound Apps & Agents ecosystem, they can access AI assistants, translation tools and other online services while consuming far less power than conventional Wi-Fi.

Digital Trends also cites Qualcomm research suggesting that up to 70% of users want advanced AI capabilities in wearables. Examples include real-time translation, contextual assistance and personalized hearing, all experiences that can be handled through voice.

Technical experience and degree requirements

Applicants need a strong foundation in audio signal processing and experience developing, implementing and debugging audio algorithms using both conventional signal processing and ML. The required programming skills include Embedded C/C++, Matlab and Python, alongside experience with embedded platforms, DSP architectures and real-time operating systems.

The listing calls for familiarity with audio model architectures including CNNs, RNNs, U-Nets and Transformers, as well as expertise in fixed-point and floating-point implementation. It also seeks audio system design, acoustic measurement and performance analysis skills. DSP intrinsics and assembly programming are a plus.

Under educational qualifications, Qualcomm lists a master's or PhD in engineering, electronics and communication, electrical, computer science or a related field. Separately, its minimum qualification is a bachelor's degree in engineering, information systems, computer science or a related field.
