Italy's embassy in Bangkok issued an apology following viral footage of Italian teenagers behaving disruptively on a city train, an incident that ignited debate about tourist conduct and Thailand's visa policies amid declining visitor numbers.

A confrontation between a Thai woman and a group of Italian teenagers on a Bangkok train has prompted an official apology from Italy's embassy after video of the incident spread rapidly online, accumulating more than 28,000 shares and reigniting debates about foreign visitor behaviour in Thailand.
The TikTok video, posted on Friday, captured a Thai passenger repeatedly asking the group of young tourists to lower their voices on Bangkok's mass transit system, which carries over 2 million passengers daily and serves as the primary public transportation for both locals and visitors navigating the capital.
"In Thailand, we don't scream," the woman is heard saying off-camera. A female member of the Italian group responded: "Sorry for bringing money to your country." The footage also shows a teenage boy initially waving at the camera before raising only his middle finger in a vulgar gesture.
The exchange escalated as the Thai woman accused the visitors of having "no manners," before she herself resorted to similar language and gestures. The video was captioned: "What nationality are they?? Is it time for Thailand to stop free visas yet?"
Official Response and Apology
Italy's embassy in Bangkok condemned what it described as the "inappropriate behaviour of a group of Italian underage tourists" who were on a school trip. In a Facebook statement, the embassy apologised "to the people of Thailand and to everyone affected."
"Italians deeply understand and appreciate the values that Thai society places on respect for others, courtesy, and harmonious coexistence," the statement read. The two countries have maintained diplomatic relations since 1868, marking 157 years of bilateral ties.
The embassy also shared a video featuring three adults identifying themselves as group leaders, along with the teenager filmed making the offensive gesture. Each offered apologies to Thai people, with one woman stating the boy would be "returning to Italy as soon as possible" due to his conduct.
Divided Public Reaction
The incident has sparked considerable debate on social media, with opinions split between those criticising the teenagers for disrespecting local customs and others who felt the Thai woman's reaction was disproportionate. The TikTok user who posted the video did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Tourism Context and Policy Changes
The confrontation comes at a sensitive time for Thailand's tourism sector, which remains central to the national economy but has faced persistent challenges in recovering to pre-pandemic levels. The country recorded 17.36 million foreign tourist arrivals from January to mid-July 2026, representing a 3.05 percent decrease compared to the same period in 2025.
This follows a broader downturn in 2025, when Thailand welcomed 32.97 million international visitors, a 7.23 percent decline from 2024's 35.55 million, marking the first annual drop since the coronavirus pandemic devastated the kingdom's tourism industry.
The 60-day visa exemption scheme, which was introduced in July 2024 as a temporary stimulus measure to revive tourism following pandemic-related losses, is now being scaled back. Thailand's Cabinet approved on May 19, 2026, a reduction of visa-free stays from 60 days to 30 days for travellers from 93 countries, including Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States. The new rules took effect 15 days after publication in the Royal Gazette.
Thai officials cited security concerns as a primary reason for the policy reversal, noting that the 60-day exemption created gaps by allowing visitors to enter without prior screening. Thai embassies were unable to conduct checks on criminal records or financial status before arrival under the exemption framework.
Enforcement Crackdown
The visa policy adjustment is part of a broader government effort to address crimes committed by foreign nationals. Thailand is preparing to overhaul its immigration law to expedite deportation procedures for foreign offenders, after authorities found that existing legal processes under the Immigration Act had slowed the removal of individuals involved in criminal activity.
In recent months, Thai immigration offices have been ordered to intensify enforcement against repeat short-term visitors and illegal operators. The government crackdown has followed several high-profile arrests of foreigners over drug offences, sex trafficking, public indecency and operating unlicensed businesses.
Italian visitor numbers to Thailand have also declined, with approximately 267,000 Italians visiting in 2024. Tourism Ministry figures indicate Italian arrivals dropped around 9.6 percent in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period the previous year, mirroring broader regional trends across European markets.
