British Indian businessman Amit Bhatia leads consortium in talks for Liverpool FC minority stake

Fenway Sports Group has confirmed that a consortium led by British Indian businessman Amit Bhatia is in advanced discussions to acquire a strategic minority stake in Liverpool Football Club, with the club valued at more than $6 billion in the ongoing negotiations.

The investment talks represent a significant milestone for the Premier League club, which Forbes valued at $6.2 billion in May 2026, making Liverpool the fourth most valuable football club globally behind Real Madrid ($9.5 billion), Barcelona ($7.5 billion), and Manchester United ($7.2 billion). FSG, which purchased Liverpool in October 2010 for £300 million from George Gillett and Tom Hicks when the club was £350 million in debt, is expected to retain majority ownership under the proposed deal.

Who is Amit Bhatia?

Amit Bhatia, 46, is a Cornell University graduate who launched his career as an investment banker at Morgan Stanley before transitioning to private equity. He currently manages Swordfish Investments, a multi asset investment firm, and serves as non executive chairman of Breedon Group, a building materials company.

Bhatia brings substantial football experience to the table. He spent 18 seasons as director, co owner and former chairman of Queens Park Rangers, playing a pivotal role in the Championship club's ownership structure. He recently stepped down from QPR's board and transferred his ownership stake to majority owner Ruben Gnanalingam, a move that clears regulatory obstacles for his consortium's pursuit of Liverpool investment.

The Mittal family's financial power

The consortium's financial backing comes from one of the world's wealthiest business dynasties. Bhatia is married to Vanisha Mittal, daughter of Lakshmi Mittal, executive chairman of ArcelorMittal, the world's second largest steelmaking company, which produced 55.6 million tonnes of steel in 2025.

According to the Sunday Times Rich List 2025, Lakshmi Mittal and his family were valued at £15.44 billion, making them the eighth wealthiest UK residents at the time. The patriarch relocated from the UK to Switzerland and the UAE in 2025, with property holdings in Dubai including on Naïa Island, following changes to UK tax policy.

Aditya Mittal, Lakshmi Mittal's son who has served as CEO of ArcelorMittal since 2021, further extends the family's sports portfolio through co ownership of the NBA's Boston Celtics.

Proven sports investment credentials

The Mittal family entered football in 2007 by acquiring a 20 percent stake in QPR alongside Formula One figures Flavio Briatore and Bernie Ecclestone. Amit Bhatia subsequently became one of the club's most influential directors and eventually served as chairman.

The family's sports investment activity has accelerated recently. In May 2026, the Mittal family acquired a 75 percent controlling stake in Indian Premier League franchise Rajasthan Royals for $1.65 billion, with partner Adar Poonawalla holding 18 percent. This substantial cricket investment demonstrates both the family's commitment to expanding their sports portfolio and their financial capacity to execute major transactions.

FSG's investment track record

The American ownership group has previously welcomed strategic minority investors. In 2021, RedBird Capital Partners made a significant investment into FSG, with LeBron James and Maverick Carter becoming part of FSG's ownership group after exchanging a previously held interest in Liverpool Football Club.

FSG's broader sports portfolio includes the Boston Red Sox baseball team, which won four World Series championships under their ownership, along with stakes in NASCAR's RFK Racing and TGL's Boston Common Golf. This multi sport experience positions FSG as an established partner for sophisticated sports investors.

Next steps

While FSG has confirmed that discussions are taking place, the ownership group emphasized that no agreement has been finalized. If completed, the transaction would bring fresh investment to Liverpool while FSG maintains control as majority owner, a structure designed to provide capital injection without diluting strategic decision making authority.
