IPL stakeholders' meeting postponed due to PM Modi's ceremony with Team India

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has postponed its meeting with Indian Premier League stakeholders, originally scheduled for Thursday, October 15, as officials must attend a felicitation ceremony hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi to honor the national cricket teams.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia announced the decision, with the meeting postponed indefinitely. The gathering was intended to bring together franchise owners, chief executives, IPL host state associations and broadcasters to discuss matters concerning the tournament ahead of the upcoming season.

"The meeting with the IPL Franchise Owners, CEOs, IPL Hosting State Associations and Broadcasters, scheduled to be held on October 15, 2026, in Mumbai, has been postponed," Saikia stated in an official BCCI release.

Prime Minister to honor Asian Games cricket champions

Prime Minister Modi will felicitate both the Indian men's and women's cricket teams on October 15 following their exceptional performances at the 2026 Asian Games held in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The 20th Asian Games, officially known as Aichi-Nagoya 2026, took place from September 19 to October 4, with cricket events conducted at Kōrogi Sports Park in Nisshin.

India achieved a golden double in cricket at the Games. The men's team defeated Pakistan by 19 runs in the final on October 3, successfully defending their title from the previous Asian Games. The women's team also claimed gold, defeating Sri Lanka by 147 runs in their final. Both teams competed in the Twenty20 format against nine other participating nations.

"The Hon'ble Prime Minister of India is scheduled to felicitate the Indian men's and women's teams for their outstanding performances at the recently concluded 20th Asian Games on October 15, 2026, in New Delhi. Accordingly, BCCI officials will be required to attend the felicitation ceremony," the statement explained.

Stakeholder requests contribute to postponement

Saikia, who was elected as BCCI secretary in January 2025, also noted that several stakeholders had requested the postponement. "In view of the above, and with a view to facilitating maximum participation in person, it has been decided to postpone the meeting," he said.

The planned gathering would have addressed key issues ahead of IPL 2027, the tournament's 20th edition, scheduled to run from March 14 to May 30, 2027. The league currently features 10 franchises: Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, Gujarat Titans, and Lucknow Super Giants. The upcoming season will comprise 84 matches across these teams.

India's broader success at Asian Games

India's cricket success at the Asian Games was part of a broader strong showing at the event, where the nation finished fourth in the overall medal table with 85 medals, including 21 gold, 27 silver, and 37 bronze. This represented India's second-highest medal tally at the Asian Games after the 2023 edition in Hangzhou. The event marked the third time Japan has hosted the Asian Games, following Tokyo in 1958 and Hiroshima in 1994.

The BCCI has not yet announced a new date or venue for the stakeholders meeting. Saikia confirmed that the revised schedule would be communicated in due course.
