Netflix announces Violet Bridgerton prequel series exploring Edmund romance

Netflix announced Thursday, October 8, that it is developing a limited series centered on a young Violet Bridgerton and her romance with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton. The prequel will explore the love story that produced the eight Bridgerton siblings and ended in tragedy when Edmund died from a bee sting.

Shonda Rhimes will serve as co-writer, showrunner and executive producer alongside Nicholas Nardini. The duo previously collaborated on Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, which earned a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Period and/or Character Hairstyling in 2023. Rhimes renewed her overall deal with Netflix for five more years in August 2026, extending her partnership through 2031. Her original 2017 deal with the streamer, reportedly worth more than $100 million, marked her departure from network television.

Bridgerton franchise continues to dominate Netflix viewership

The announcement comes as the Bridgerton franchise continues to dominate Netflix's viewership metrics. Season 1 attracted 82 million households in its first 28 days, making it the platform's biggest series at the time. Both Season 1 and Season 3 now rank among Netflix's top 10 most-watched English-language series of all time, with 113.3 million views and 106 million views respectively. Season 4, which debuted in January 2026, accumulated 889 million hours watched throughout the year, making it Netflix's biggest romance series of 2026.

Edmund Bridgerton's tragic story shaped Anthony's character

Edmund Bridgerton has appeared only in flashbacks throughout the main series, portrayed by Rupert Evans in Season 2. He was depicted as a devoted husband and playful father whose sudden death from an allergic reaction left Violet pregnant with their youngest child, Hyacinth. His passing forced Anthony, then a young man, to assume the role of viscount and head of household. The trauma shaped Anthony's early belief that marriage should be practical rather than romantic, a conviction that defined much of his character arc until he met Kate Sharma.

Ruth Gemmell has portrayed the widowed Lady Violet since the first season, offering glimpses of her younger self through brief flashbacks. Connie Jenkins-Greig played teenage Violet Ledger in Queen Charlotte, though in a supporting capacity. The new series will mark the first time Violet's early years and courtship take center stage.

Spinoff follows proven formula for franchise expansion

The prequel follows a proven formula for the franchise. Queen Charlotte demonstrated that Bridgerton's universe could support successful spinoffs, and the main series has already been renewed for Seasons 5 and 6. Netflix plans to adapt all eight books from Julia Quinn's romance series about the Bridgerton siblings. The main series has collected 7 Emmy Awards across multiple categories, including Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance for Julie Andrews.

Netflix has not announced casting for the young Violet and Edmund roles, nor has it set a premiere date. The streamer is investing heavily in period dramas as part of its content strategy, with multiple projects in development for 2026 and beyond. The Violet Bridgerton series represents another expansion of a franchise that has proven both critically acclaimed and commercially successful for the platform.

The series will chronicle how Violet Ledger became Lady Bridgerton, detailing her courtship with Edmund before his untimely death. It remains to be seen whether the show will extend beyond their romance to include the early years of raising their children, or if it will focus exclusively on the period before tragedy struck the family.
