Bollywood's wealthiest figure built Rs 36,300 crore fortune behind the scenes
Bhushan Kumar, chairman of T-Series, has amassed an estimated Rs 36,300 crore fortune through music, film production and digital content, surpassing the wealth of Bollywood's biggest stars without ever acting or directing.

Bollywood's wealthiest figure built Rs 36,300 crore fortune behind the scenes
While Bollywood's superstar actors typically dominate wealth rankings, the industry's richest figure has built his empire entirely behind the camera. Bhushan Kumar, chairman and managing director of T-Series, commands an estimated fortune of Rs 36,300 crore (approximately $3.8 billion), according to the Hurun India Rich List 2026 released last week. His wealth substantially exceeds that of the industry's most prominent actors, including Shah Rukh Khan, whose current estimated net worth stands at Rs 10,000 crore.
Kumar's journey to the top began under tragic circumstances. He inherited T-Series at just 19 years old in 1997 following the murder of his father, Gulshan Kumar, who was killed by gunmen linked to the Mumbai underworld syndicate D-Company on 12 August that year. Taking control alongside his uncle, former actor Krishan Kumar, the young businessman transformed what was already a successful music label into one of India's most formidable entertainment conglomerates.
From humble beginnings to industry giant
The T-Series story began with remarkably modest roots. Gulshan Kumar, initially a fruit juice seller in Delhi, founded the company in 1983 to sell audio cassettes. The business initially traded in pirated Bollywood songs before transitioning to original music production. The company's first major breakthrough arrived in 1988 with the soundtrack for the Bollywood blockbuster 'Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak', starring Aamir Khan. The album became one of the best-selling Indian music albums of the 1980s, moving over 8 million copies.
By the time of the founder's death, T-Series had experienced explosive growth. Annual earnings surged from Rs 20 crore ($16 million) in 1985 to Rs 500 crore ($140 million) by 1997. The company played a pivotal role in sparking a boom in the Indian music industry during the early 1990s, establishing T-Series as a dominant force well before the digital age.
Expanding the empire
Under Bhushan Kumar's leadership, T-Series evolved far beyond its origins as a music company. The business expanded into film production, distribution and digital entertainment. Kumar has personally produced over 150 films since assuming control, including major commercial successes such as 'Kabir Singh' (2019), 'Hindi Medium' (2017), 'Aashiqui 2' (2013), and 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa' (2007). The company now controls an estimated 35 per cent of India's music market and has produced more than 100 films, cementing its position as one of the country's most prominent entertainment brands.
Digital dominance on YouTube
T-Series' digital success has proven equally transformative for the business. The company's main YouTube channel reached a historic milestone in May 2019 when it became the first channel on the platform to surpass 100 million subscribers, earning YouTube's Red Diamond Creator Award. This achievement followed a highly publicized subscriber race with Swedish YouTuber PewDiePie throughout 2018 and 2019, a competition that generated hundreds of millions of views and dramatically raised T-Series' global profile.
T-Series held the position of YouTube's most-subscribed channel from 14 April 2019 until 1 June 2024, when it was overtaken by MrBeast after approximately five years at the top. By August 2026, the main T-Series channel had accumulated more than 314 million subscribers and over 353 billion views, making it the platform's most-viewed channel and second-most-subscribed channel.
The YouTube operation extends well beyond a single channel. T-Series maintains a multi-channel network consisting of 43 channels that collectively command over 591 million subscribers as of April 2025. According to Kumar himself, YouTube now accounts for 60 to 70 per cent of T-Series' yearly earnings, making the platform central to the company's business model and a key driver of its valuation.
Wealth beyond stardom
The scale of the Kumar family's wealth has grown substantially over time. Earlier Hurun reporting valued the family fortune at around Rs 10,000 crore, making them one of the richest families in Indian cinema. The latest figures represent a significant increase, though such rankings should be understood as estimates based on business and asset valuations at specific points in time.
What distinguishes Kumar from Bollywood's other wealthy personalities is the nature of his fortune. While actors such as Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan built their wealth primarily through acting and related ventures, Kumar's fortune stems from his expansion of T-Series as a comprehensive entertainment empire spanning music labels, film production and one of the world's largest digital content operations.
The story demonstrates that Bollywood's wealthiest figures are not always its most visible. Behind many of the industry's biggest films and songs stands a business empire whose reach extends from traditional music production to commanding one of YouTube's largest global audiences.
